What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is the name you enter into a web browser to allow people to load your website. For example: hipposerve.co.uk.
It also forms part of your email address. For example: [email protected]
I already have a domain name, can I transfer this to you?
Yes, you can. There are different ways to do this depending on the type of domain name that you have, but our automated systems do most of the work for you. You will have to contact your existing domain registrar and tell them that you wish to move, and then our systems can do the rest. It takes a few days for the transfer to take place.
Do I need to have a domain name to use a website?
In short, yes. Without a domain name, you would need to use the server's IP address in order to access your website. This would look something like this 84.54.22.44/~mysite. It doesn't make your website easy to use.
Is my business protected when I register a domain name?
When your domain name is registered it means no-one else can use it and pass their website off as yours. However, you may want to register different variants of domain name to prevent those from being used too. For example: register .com, .co.uk, .org and .net
Can I have additional domains pointed at my account?
Yes, we actually recommend it. The more versions of your business name that you have parked or being used as an alias, the less chance there is of someone else using that name and passing themselves off as you.

Why are different TLD's (top level domain names) different prices.
It's all down to popularity. The more desirable a TLD, the more it will cost. Some TLDs are placed on promotion from time to time.
Will I need to renew my domain name?
Yes. You will need to renew your domain name depending on the length of time that you registered it for. This is typically 1–5 years, depending on your choice.
Are there any rules on the characters I can use in my domain name?
Following are the basic rules to be observed while choosing a domain name.
- Domains can contain the English-language letters a-z, and the digits 0-9.
- Hyphens can also be used, but it can not be used at the beginning and at the end of a domain name. Two hyphens together is usually not permitted, and also hyphens cannot appear at both third and fourth positions.
- Spaces and special characters (such as !, $, &, _ and so on) are not permitted.
- The minimum length is 3 and the maximum length is 63 characters (excluding the TLD extension ".co.uk").
- Domain names are not case-sensitive.(i.e., you may use a mix of upper or lower case letters)
Who owns my domain name?
A domain name is never owned outright, but rented based on the registrar's terms and conditions. You do however get exclusive use and automatic right to renew the address.
Are there any restrictions on the TLDs I can use?
Different TLD's have different restrictions, for example, you can use the TLD .eu unless your business have a presence in the EU. However, we are unable to list all the TLD's here. You are advised to check that you are able to use a particular TLD for the purpose intended.
