What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is the name you enter into a web browser to allow people to load your website. For example: hipposerve.co.uk.
It also forms part of your email address. For example: [email protected]
Do I need to get hosting or an email?
You can if you like, but it isn't necessary. We will simply park the domain name for you, so it is reserved and you can use it later.
Do I need to have a domain name to use a website?
In short, yes. Without a domain name, you would need to use the server's IP address in order to access your website. This would look something like this 84.54.22.44/~mysite. It doesn't make your website easy to use.
What happens if my domain name expires?
If you choose not to use your domain name, it will expire. The expiry date is printed on the certificate. At this point you have 30 days "grace" to reclaim your domain, or it will be released back to the public.
Can I buy more than one domain?
You can buy as many domain names as you like and add it to your portfolio
Why are different TLD's (top level domain names) different prices.
It's all down to popularity. The more desirable a TLD, the more it will cost. Some TLDs are placed on promotion from time to time.
Will I need to renew my domain name?
Yes. You will need to renew your domain name depending on the length of time that you registered it for. In the case of this offer, it is every 1 year.
Are there any rules on the characters I can use in my domain name?
Following are the basic rules to be observed while choosing a domain name.
- Domains can contain the English-language letters a-z, and the digits 0-9.
- Hyphens can also be used, but it can not be used at the beginning and at the end of a domain name. Two hyphens together is usually not permitted, and also hyphens cannot appear at both third and fourth positions.
- Spaces and special characters (such as !, $, &, _ and so on) are not permitted.
- The minimum length is 3 and the maximum length is 63 characters (excluding the TLD extension ".co.uk").
- Domain names are not case-sensitive.(i.e., you may use a mix of upper or lower case letters)
Who owns my domain name?
A domain name is never owned outright, but rented based on the registrar's terms and conditions. When you register the domain, you will be asked to provide the owner's full name for the rental period. If you are gifting the domain to someone we suggest you use their name.
Are there any restrictions on the TLDs I can use?
Different TLD's have different restrictions, for example, you can use the TLD .eu unless your business have a presence in the EU. However, we are unable to list all the TLD's here. You are advised to check that you are able to use a particular TLD for the purpose intended.

14.1 This offer is available to UK & EU customers only.
14.1 The domain registration applies for the following TLDs only: .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .eu, .co.uk, .uk, .al, .me, .mk, .ro, .rs, .si, .org.uk, .me.uk, .plc.uk, .ltd.uk, .wales, .cymru, .com.al. , .net.al, .org.al. TLDs only. A surcharge will apply to other TLDs if chosen.
After the registration period expires, the domains will renew at our standard price for the chosen domain name. The domain will be registered as soon as payment is received.
14.2 The personalized gift certificate will include the message provided by the person registering the domain. Hipposerve can not be held responsible for any spelling or typographical errors in this message. The gift certificate will also include the registration date and the expiry date of the domain.
14.3 By purchasing this gift, you give permission for the named recipient to transfer the domain to their own account if they wish. They will be provided with a unique code on their gift certificate that allows them to initiate this transfer. Full ownership of the domain will be transferred to them, and they will become responsible for renewing the domain.
14.4 A matched email account includes 1 mailbox for 12 months. The discount included will renew at our standard mailbox price at time of renewal. Additional mailboxes are charged at our standard rate. Hippo Mail Exchange mail boxes are excluded from this offer.
14.5 Attached Hosting includes our Hippo Select plan for 12 months at a discounted rate. After 12 months, this will renew at our standard monthly rate.
14.6 40% Discounts. These discounts are valid on one of each of the discounted products. Additional products will be charged at full rate. All products renew at our standard monthly rate at the time of renewal.
